IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS

to Blatnohrad – Zalavar, Hungary

The Military Ordinariate of Slovakia in conjunction with the Military Ordinariate of Hungary is inviting you to a Sts. Cyril and Methodius‘ joint pilgrimage in Blatnohrad – Zalavar in Hungary taking place on 17th Jun 2023.

The principality headquarters in Blatnohrad was at its height during the reign of Pribina’s son Kocel, to whom the holy brothers of Solun Sts. Cyril and Methodius paid a visit on their way to the Eternal City.  It was in Blatohrad where an important archeological artifact – a shard with a Glagolitic sign – was found proving the use of Glagolitic in our region.

Old Church Slavonic as the fourth liturgic language, God’s blessing, and the genius of Sts. Cyril and Methodius (the patron saint of Europe) laid the foundation of Slovak, Slavic, and Central- European education.

Thanks to the wise decision of our monarchs Rastislav, Svatopluk, and Kocel to turn to the Byzantne Emperor Michael III and ask him to send missionaries to spread God’s word in a language that was understandable for Slavic nations.

In Blatnohrad one can perceive our nation’s spiritual legacy, however, this is considered to be a sacred place not only for Slovaks but for other Slavic nations as well.

The Military Ordinariate of Slovakia, in the Jubilee year of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in 2013, issued a book dielo Koceľ a Blatnohrad.

Please use personal transport to get to Blatnohrad.
